Are Snow Days a thing of the past in the Lakes Region?
Do Snow Days Still Exist in the Lakes Region?
For generations, winter in the Lakes Region meant snow forts, sledding hills, and the magic of a surprise day off from school. But if you ask parents today, the question isn’t when the next snow day is — it’s whether one will happen at all.
Looking back at the last five winters, most local districts have averaged just three to five true snow days per year. Even in years with respectable snowfall totals, schools increasingly rely on two-hour delays or remote learning days rather than full cancellations. The outlier was the winter of 2022–2023, when a massive late-season storm shut down the region for multiple days at once — a perfect example of today’s “boom or bust” weather pattern.
Warmer overall winters have also shifted the equation. Ice and mixed precipitation now cause more delays than outright closures, keeping buses safe without cancelling the entire school day. And after the pandemic, most Lakes Region districts reserve the right to switch to remote learning once traditional snow days are used.
Winter hasn’t gone away — it’s just changed. And that same evolution shows up in real estate, too. Fewer people list, fewer buyers compete, and for those willing to move in winter, the opportunities can be surprisingly strong.
