Five of the Best Winter Hikes Around Lake Winnisquam and Lake Winnipesaukee
Five of the Best Winter Hikes Around Lake Winnisquam and Lake Winnipesaukee
Winter in the Lakes Region has a quiet magic to it. The crowds thin out, the air gets crisp, and the views somehow feel even bigger when everything is dusted with snow. One of the best parts is that you do not need to travel far to find incredible winter hiking. Right around Lake Winnisquam and Lake Winnipesaukee, there are several trails that stay accessible, scenic, and rewarding all season long.
Here are five of my favorite winter hikes in this part of the Lakes Region, all within a short drive and perfect for getting outside when the snow starts to fly.
1. Mount Major via the Boulder Loop
Mount Major is one of the most popular hikes in the Lakes Region for a reason. Even in winter, it delivers some of the best views of Lake Winnipesaukee you can find. The Boulder Loop adds a little variety and tends to spread people out more than the main trail.
In winter, this hike is a solid workout but still very doable with proper traction. The summit opens up to a sweeping view of the Broads, with snow covered islands and frozen coves stretching out below you. On a clear day, it feels like you are standing on top of the entire lake.
Why it is great in winter:
- Well traveled trail means packed snow most days
- Big payoff views without a full day commitment
- Close to Alton Bay and easy to access
2. Belknap Mountain at Gunstock
Gunstock is known for skiing, but the Belknap Range also offers some excellent winter hiking. The Belknap Mountain trails are well marked and maintained, making them a great option if you want elevation without extreme exposure.
The views toward Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding Lakes Region hills are especially impressive in winter, when leafless trees open up sightlines you do not get in summer.
Why it is great in winter:
- Reliable trail system with multiple route options
- Fantastic views even before the summit
- Convenient parking and access
3. Ahern State Park
Ahern State Park sits right on Lake Winnisquam and is one of the most underrated winter walking and hiking spots in the area. The trails here are relatively flat, making them perfect for a more relaxed winter outing.
You will find wooded paths, open shoreline views, and plenty of quiet moments looking out over the frozen lake. It is a great option if you want to get outside without tackling steep climbs or icy scrambles.
Why it is great in winter:
- Flat terrain ideal for casual winter hikes
- Direct access to Winnisquam shoreline views
- Peaceful and rarely crowded in colder months
4. Opechee Park and Opechee Trails
Right in Laconia, Opechee Park connects to a network of trails that are perfect for winter walks and light hikes. These trails follow the river, pass through wooded areas, and connect to city maintained paths that are often plowed or packed down.
This is a great choice if you want something close to town, easy to navigate, and still scenic. Snow covered trees and flowing water make it feel far more remote than it actually is.
Why it is great in winter:
- Easy access right in Laconia
- Gentle grades and wide paths
- Great option for quick outings or sunset walks
5. Castle in the Clouds Estate Trails
Just a short drive from Winnipesaukee, Castle in the Clouds offers an extensive trail system that stays beautiful year round. While the castle itself is seasonal, many of the trails remain open for winter hiking.
Snow transforms the forests and fields into something straight out of a postcard. Some trails offer distant views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Ossipee Range, and the variety of terrain means you can tailor your hike to your comfort level.
Why it is great in winter:
- Wide range of trail difficulty
- Stunning winter scenery and open landscapes
- Well managed trail system
A Few Winter Hiking Tips for the Lakes Region
Before heading out, make sure you are prepared. Traction like microspikes can make a huge difference, especially on popular peaks. Dress in layers, bring more water than you think you need, and always check conditions before you go.
Winter hiking around Lake Winnisquam and Lake Winnipesaukee is one of the best ways to enjoy the Lakes Region during the quieter months. Whether you are looking for big views, peaceful shoreline walks, or a quick escape into the woods, there is something nearby for everyone.
If you are thinking about making the Lakes Region your home or want to learn more about what life is like here year round, feel free to reach out anytime.
